Fairy Lights vs Festoon Lights: Which Suits Your Venue
They look similar in photos but work very differently in practice. The right choice depends on venue height, surface texture, and how photo-heavy the event is.

You have a venue, and it needs light. The choice often comes down to two options: the delicate twinkle of fairy lights or the bold statement of festoons. This isn't just a style preference like choosing a font. It's a practical decision about scale, atmosphere, and what you want your guests to feel. We've rigged lighting for hundreds of events across Sydney, from backyard 21sts in Coogee to corporate launches in the CBD, and the most common mistake is picking the wrong light for the space.
Festoons for Structure and Big Spaces
Think of festoon lights as architectural. They don't just add light, they define a space. With their larger bulbs and heavier cables, they create lines, borders, and ceilings where none exist. When we rig a zigzag pattern across a large marquee for a wedding or span them over a rooftop bar in the city, the festoons become a primary feature of the venue's design. They have a visual weight that draws the eye up and makes an area feel complete and intentional.
Festoons are built for impact over distance. The individual bulbs are large enough to be seen and appreciated from across a lawn, a large hall, or a surf club deck. This makes them our go-to for almost any large outdoor event, especially for evening functions that start while the sun is still up. As dusk settles over Sydney, the warm glow of the filament-style LED bulbs creates an instant, inviting atmosphere. They provide enough functional light for guests to see, but with a warmth that feels celebratory, not industrial. We recommend them for large backyards in the Eastern Suburbs, big community hall gatherings, and any event where you need to create a "room" outdoors.

Fairy Lights for Intimacy and Texture
Fairy lights work on a different principle. They are not about structure, they are about texture and magic. Their power is in their numbers and their proximity. A single string of fairy lights from a distance is barely visible, but thousands of them up close create an immersive, sparkling environment. We use them to add detail to a space, not to define it. Think of wrapping the pillars of a Paddington terrace for an engagement party, creating a dense, twinkling canopy over a dance floor, or weaving them through the branches of a tree in a garden in Rose Bay.
Because they are small, fairy lights are best used where guests will be close to them. They are perfect for creating a glittering backdrop behind a bridal table, filling glass jars as centrepieces, or creating a "curtain of light" effect for an entrance. For indoor events, like a corporate dinner in a Double Bay restaurant or a milestone birthday in a smaller function room, fairy lights add a sophisticated sparkle without overwhelming the space. They suggest a mood rather than declaring it. Our extensive range of fairy light and festoon hire options includes various lengths and styles to suit these detailed applications.
The Realities of Rigging in Sydney
Choosing between the two isn't just about aesthetics. The practical side of installation, power, and safety dictates what's possible for your venue. We handle this every day, and it's where professional experience really matters, especially when dealing with Sydney's variable weather and diverse venues. Before you commit, you need to understand the operational differences.
- Power Requirements: A few strings of LED fairy lights draw very little power. Multiple strings of heavy-duty festoons, however, can add up. We always check the venue's switchboard to ensure we're not overloading a circuit, a common issue in older homes and halls around Sydney.
- Weight and Rigging Points: Fairy lights are lightweight and can be attached to almost anything. Festoons are heavy. They require secure, structural rigging points like beams, established poles, or large tree branches. We cannot safely attach them to flimsy fences or small trees. This often requires us to install our own trussing or lighting poles.
- Weatherproofing: All our outdoor lighting is commercial-grade with a high IP rating for water resistance. This is essential for coastal venues from Bondi to Bronte where salt air and humidity are a constant, and for dealing with a sudden summer southerly storm.
- Safety and Compliance: Professional installation means all cables are safely run, taped down to prevent trips, and all electricals are tested and tagged. For public or corporate events, this isn't optional, it's a requirement.
- Dimming Control: Both light types can be dimmed to control the mood throughout the evening, but this requires specific dimmers and control systems. It's not as simple as plugging them in. We can supply and operate this for you.
- Bulb Durability: We exclusively use LED bulbs. They don't generate heat like old incandescent bulbs, making them safe to touch and to use near fabrics like marquees. They are also shatterproof plastic, not glass, which is critical for safety at any event.
- Setup and Pack Down: A simple fairy light installation can be quick. A large, complex festoon rig takes time and planning. This needs to be factored into your event's bump-in and bump-out schedule.
Our rule of thumb is simple: if your guests will be more than five metres away from the light source, use festoons. Their large bulbs have impact from a distance. For anything closer, like table decorations, wrapping a pillar, or an intimate indoor space, fairy lights provide the detail and sparkle that would be lost from afar. Using the wrong light for the scale is the most common mistake we see.
So, Which One is Right for Your Event?
The decision is based on scale. If you are lighting a large, open area and you want to create structure and a visible "wow" factor, you need festoons. Their job is to define the space and create a warm, encompassing glow that can be appreciated from anywhere in the venue. They are the workhorse of large-scale event lighting.
If you are working with a smaller, more intimate space or want to add magical detail to specific features, you need fairy lights. Their job is to create texture, sparkle, and a sense of wonder when viewed up close. They are the fine brushstrokes in your lighting design. While both are part of our general lighting hire inventory, they perform very different jobs.
We've been delivering and setting up lighting from our warehouse in the Eastern Suburbs since 1999. We stock both types and know exactly which one will work for your venue. If you're planning an event and need some straightforward advice, get in touch with our team.
